The candy corn debacle

So, every year around this time everyone gets ready for the fall weather and tasty treats that come with the season. When I think of fall scents, I think of apple, pumpkin, spices and cinnamon. When I think of visions of fall, I think of leaves changing colors, sweaters and pumpkins. When I think of sweet treats, I especially focus on candy corn.

You may think the candy corn is a very simple concept. Heck, it's sugar and food dye, right? WRONG! In my family and circle of friends, the candy corn is reason for much debate, and I am very serious when I say that. Although the debate is not heated, it is a debate, nonetheless. The debate stems from the question, which side is the top of the candy corn? Now, you are thinking well of course I know the answer. But in our group it is a pretty evenly split topic. Ask a few of the people around you, and you may find the same debacle.

My husband and I along with our smart family members and friends (just kidding), think the pointy part is the top. I mean it only seems natural to me that the wider end would be the bottom. How would said candy corn stand on the tip? It can't!

Members of the other side of the debate said that the wider part is the top because of how how corn grows on a cob. Hello, I have yet to see a candy corn cob! In my mind, that makes their argument a moot point.

This started years ago, and it got to the point where my husband and I e-mailed Brach's (don't judge us; I know we are insane), and they took the politically correct way out. (Hey, I was surprised they even responded.) They said that when they create the candy corn the point is the bottom; but when it comes out of the molding, the point is the top.

One year for Halloween a husband and wife couple who are friends of my parents dressed as candy corn, each dressed to represent what side they thought was the top.

What side do you think is the top? Think about it; and by the way, you will never look at candy corn in the same way ever again.

What I am excited about right now!

Negativity is everywhere, and I oftentimes let it get a real grab on me and get down in the dumps. So, I am going to be a half glass full person today and list 5 things I am looking forward to.

1) Christmas! Yes, you may say that Christmas is too far away, but it's not in my mind. I love the whole feeling of being together with my family, baking Christmas cookies, seeing friends, snow and beautiful Christmas music (especially the music). I also adore Christmas Eve Mass. Christmas is, hands down, my favorite time of the year.

2) Going to the pumpkin patch in a few weeks. Although we don't have kids, Joe and I have gone each year since we were married. We love apple cider, going through a shop they have, picking out pumpkins to carve, kettle corn and the crisp air. I also love fall!

3) Alumni Band. I mentioned before that Joe and I met in band in high school, and my parents also me tin high school band (same band). Our closest friends were friends from high school band, and we get together and "play" (if that's what you want to call the sounds we make) and visit with friends each year for homecoming. Next weekend is alumni band, and i am really looking forward to it. Traditionally Joe, my sister, my brother, my aunt, uncle and a lot of friends come back to participate. Oh the fun!

4) To see where my life is in a year. Although I don't like to jump ahead, I am looking forward to what life will bring. We are looking into changing careers and some things in life in general. Stay tuned!

5) Getting my house cleaned for the holidays. Although the process is tedious, I love the finished product. I do a real deep clean right before the holidays. I just love the feel of every closet and drawer being organized and every nook and cranny being cleaned!

Officially fall!

I am trying to figure out what happened to the beautiful fall weather we had at the end of summer last week. Suddenly it is sweltering outside, and it's officially fall. Bring back the cooler temperatures!

I absolutely adore fall. I think one of the most amazing ways to hold onto memories is by using all of our senses and being in touch with everything around us.

The first sense is touch. When I think of the actual touch of the season, I think of how I love the touch and warmth of big sweaters and cuddling up next to a fire with my hubby (except we don't have an operating fireplace, but let me dream). I also love the crisp feel of the outside air.

The smells of fall are warm apple cider, the fall air, pumpkin spice, cinnamon and the smell of a crackling fireplace.

To me, the visions of fall are incredible: fall leaves changing colors, pumpkin patches, hayrides, people wearing warmer clothes, football and shorter days.

The tastes of fall are very similar to the smells and include pumpkin pie, apple cider, chili and cornbread, stews and soups. Oh how I love the comfort food of fall!

The sounds of fall include crackling fireplaces, football fight songs, the heater kicking on and the crunching of leaves on the ground.

I love wearing the warmer sweaters. Think about it, summer clothes aren't as generous when it comes to your figure (at least for me). I love the comfier clothes. Although I do have to be more cautious of my weight because of that very reason. I also love going to high school football games and listen to college and NFL football games playing on my television.

My biggest weakness in life is anything sweet. So, when it is pie, cobbler and cider time, I have to be careful. (You will probably notice I talk about my weight a lot. I worked hard to get it off five years ago, and it is something that is contstantly weighing on my mind.)

Since I am at work, I don't have any photos with me that I have taken in the fall; however, I will have to get some posted at some point.

Anyone else love fall, or is it just me. Think about it, what is fall to you?
